At just 11 years old, Sabella Whelan of Jordan Springs is making waves in the world of athletics, showcasing her talent and determination on the track and field. Her journey, marked by dedication and success, is one that inspires both her peers and spectators alike.
Sabella’s passion for athletics ignited at the tender age of 5, when she joined Cranebrook Little Athletics Club. Now, after six years of dedication and hard work, she continues to excel, recently expanding her horizons by competing for the Nepean Seniors Athletics Club.
“Competing with the Nepean Seniors Athletics Club has given Sabella the opportunity to compete in more competitions outside of Little Athletics NSW,” said her mother, Cristy Whelan.
“Her favourite event is High Jump” added Jamie Whelan, Sabella’s father.
At both the ANSW Youth Championships and the NSW Little Athletics State Championships held in March, Sabella clinched the gold medal in the Under 11 Girls High Jump category.
Despite facing a setback with a fall during the hurdles heats at the Little Athletics State event, Sabella regrouped, demonstrating resilience and focus to secure not only the win, but also a new personal best height of 1.45 metres.
While Sabella won’t be progressing to national championships this year due to age restrictions, her aspirations remain high. She aims to continue honing her skills during the offseason, setting her sights on future school competitions and the upcoming 2024/2025 NSW Little Athletics season, slated to kick off in October.
“Sabella is also a devoted netball player and will be focusing on the upcoming Winter competition, as well as her representative duties for the Penrith District Netball Association,” said Jamie.
Sabella’s remarkable achievements are a testament to her talent, hard work, and unwavering determination. As she continues to chase her dreams on and off the field, she embodies the spirit of perseverance and excellence, inspiring those around her to reach for the stars.
