Emu Plains artist Deborah Hughes has taken her resin art to new heights, with many homes around the country now displaying her amazing artworks and homewares.

The talented local artist began painting 13 years ago, in 2005, after watching her mother Shirley paint for many years as a fine artist. “My mother painted portraits. She used oils and was very detailed with her art. She painted all sorts of beautiful stuff” explained Deborah.

Deborah specialises in resin and ink art. She has also recently begun creative garden art, which is wall art consisting of vertical hanging gardens made from artificial greenery. You could say it’s wall art of a different kind! Her ability to match art with home has lead to a range of homewares that include cushions and framed prints.

“My resin art is abstract. I’m inspired by the ocean. It’s very coastal, like being on the water. At the same time, home trends and colours excite me. I enjoy matching my artworks to people’s homes. It’s always evolving from season to season” she said.

She has recently had her artwork shown at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where she entered in the Rural Abstract and Marine Scape categories. This gave her great exposure to a lot of people, with many drawn to the beauty of resin art.

Deborah’s favourite time of year to paint is Spring and Summer, when the local area comes ‘alive’. “These seasons are very vibrant. The colours around us then are unbelievable. I particularly enjoy painting outside. There’s no better place than being out in the open air”.

For anyone wanting to take up resin art, Deborah has these words of advice, “Have a go! Don’t worry about not having any talent when you start. It all takes time. You start small and go from there”.

“Resin art is beautiful, but it can also be a tricky material to work with. It took me two years to get used to. Once you do, it will be very rewarding” she ended.
