Conservation Volunteers Australia recently visited Emu Heights Day Care Centre to talk ‘habitat’.  

Pre-schoolers were delighted to see and meet some Giant Rainforest Snails (native to Southern QLD and Northern NSW), pass around snail shells and talk about what it means to have a ‘home’. 

Children also identified leaves, sticks and hollows around their home and the Day Care Centre as ‘good homes’ for native wildlife. 

David Jones, Ecologist and Conservation Volunteers Team Leader stated, “It’s great to see how keen the kids are to talk and learn about the environment. As this next generation grows up, their actions will greatly affect the health of critically endangered ecosystems here in Western Sydney”.  

Conservation Volunteers is currently undertaking work along the Nepean River, reviving habitat for Eastern Water Dragons, in collaboration with Penrith Council. Work involves treating invasive weeds, such as Balloon Vine, to allow native species to regenerate in the area, improving the health of the Nepean River and Lapstone Creek.  

Not-for-profit, Conservation Volunteers Australia offer opportunities for community members to join conservation projects across the Nepean Hawkesbury region. Projects focus on regenerating habitat, to improve biodiversity and run on both weekdays and weekends. Children 7 years and older are welcome with parental supervision.
