Residents and visitors are invited to stare into space and see what’s written in the stars at Camden Council’s twinkling stargazing event!

The event, which will be held on Thursday 11 July, 4:00pm-8:00pm, in Town Park, Oran Park (opposite Oran Park Library), will host Macarthur Astronomical Society (MacAstro). Staff from MacAstro, and Council, will be on-hand to help residents of all ages spot different stars, moons and the galaxy through high powered telescopes.

MacAstro President, Alan Hobbs, encourages attendees to bring a torch with red cellophane.

“Bright lights will hinder what we can see through the telescopes and the red cellophane will limit the negative effect on your eyes” Mr Hobbs said.

“We’ll be able to spot up to four moons with lots of features and details visible. The gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn, will also be visible, plus an assortment of nebulae and star clusters.

“Patience is key – it can take a little bit of practice to learn how to operate a telescope. But, with our help, you’ll be able to view the universe with a great amount of detail and make your experience the best possible”.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said residents are also able to stargaze in the comfort of their own homes, with Camden Council Libraries’ free lending telescope collection.

“There are seven telescopes available for library members to enjoy” Cr Fedeli said.

“All you have to do is put your name on the reservation list. When your name is next, you’ll be able to borrow the kit for one month with the option to extend. It’s a terrific amount of time to get real hands-on experience!”

The stargazing event is free, with attendees able to donate to MacAstro on the night.
